Traditional Family Garden

Oak pergola and lawn in a tradional style garden
This was a lovely six week project in Belsize Park, north London, to revamp an old tired garden into a beautiful family garden and wildlife haven.

Lots of natural materials were used, such as sawn green oak timber for a large raised bed that houses a row of pleached hornbeam trees and a long pergola with climbing roses.

Reclaimed Yorkstone edged the new lawn and created an informal stepping-stone pathway through the planting to a seating area on one side of the garden and a hidden shed with a wildflower roof on the other side.
Fantastic wildlife hotel made from reused landscaping materials such as stone, bricks, timber, bark and logs.
Various bird, bat and insect boxes were placed around the garden to attract wildlife - there were even nest boxes incorporated into the shed walls with glass backs so that wildlife could be observed closely!

The garden before

During the build

Although the garden wasn't the worst we'd ever seen, the layout hadn't really been thought out very well and most of the plants had been left untouched for a number of years.
Clearing the garden was a fairly big task and several large tree stumps had to be dug out before the new oak sleeper raised beds could be installed.
